We have become aware of a need for vocational training amongst children who are unable to go to secondary school. This is a great way to provide children with skills which they can use for their future. Edith’s Home has started a small tailoring class from our office in Kobwin.
So far we have 10 sewing machines in place and a local tailor teaches around 20 children in this class five days a week. The class is open to all children, however, those who are orphans attend and receive teaching free whilst others are charged a small fee. This is a very new initiative but seems to have been a big success in the community.
The demand for this sort of teaching is high in the area and it is one which we would love to expand in the future. There is huge scope for different classes including agriculture, carpentry, masonry and plumbing which would give children a chance to find employment locally. Our aim is to begin to build a small vocational school on the land that we have been given and fundraising will begin for this soon. |
