New Vocational School

posted 2 Feb 2009 04:48 by Phil Wickins   [ updated 2 Feb 2009 09:01 ]

The second vocational school was opened in January 2008.  Teachers were interviewed and selected for the new semester and attendance levels are expected to be high.  The skills taught will include carpentry and construction.

Well! Well! Well!

The supply of clean fresh water was a priority for the area and after a survey of the land we were able to access water at a shallow level.  Therefore a shallow well was dug and is currently supplying the second vocational school. The supply of water is also helpful for the development and irrigation of the land, and with construction work.

Tailoring school a community success - 20 children attending every week

posted 2 Feb 2009 04:43 by Phil Wickins   [ updated 3 Feb 2009 01:06 ]

We have become aware of a need for vocational training amongst children who are unable to go to secondary school. This is a great way to provide children with skills which they can use for their future. Edith’s Home has started a small tailoring class from our office in Kobwin.

So far we have 10 sewing machines in place and a local tailor teaches around 20 children in this class five days a week. The class is open to all children, however, those who are orphans attend and receive teaching free whilst others are charged a small fee. This is a very new initiative but seems to have been a big success in the community.

The demand for this sort of teaching is high in the area and it is one which we would love to expand in the future. There is huge scope for different classes including agriculture, carpentry, masonry and plumbing which would give children a chance to find employment locally. Our aim is to begin to build a small vocational school on the land that we have been given and fundraising will begin for this soon.

Ugandan staff provided with motorbikes for fieldwork

John and Rose, our Ugandan staff, have been struggling to do their field work with one push bike and a run down motorbike! Now that we have 60 children spread all over Kumi District to visit on a fairly regular basis they really need reliable transport. So after discussion with John and Rose we have decided to buy two motorbikes to make their work a lot easier. This should make a real difference to the day to day running of Edith’s Home in Kobwin.
